Morgan_the Tunewriter

2022

SWR Stuttgart. Broadcast production. SWR Big Band.

Arranger, musical director: Peter Herborn.

For the production Morgan_the Tunewriter I have chosen a number of pieces that do not belong to the best known and commercially most successful pieces of Lee Morgan like “Ceora” or “Sidewinder”. The selected titles are “Mr. Kenyatta”, “Melancholee” and the piece that lent its name to the entire production “Search for the new land”. Since at the time of recording Blue Note Records was worried that “Search for the new land” was not catchy enough, this production was released later. I suppose it was this rather minor catchiness that led me to select these tracks. I personally consider this LP to be one of Lee Morgan’s best. In addition to these 3 pieces, my program for the SWR Big Band also includes arrangements of the following titles: “The Procrastinator” from the LP of the same name, “Desert Moonlight” from the LP “The Rumproller” and “Our man Higgins” from “Cornbread”. Lee Morgan was not only one of the most talented trumpeters in jazz, but also a distinguished songwriter. He could write hits as well as epic works like “Search for the new land”.

Songs are memory

2008

WDR Cologne. Broadcast production. WDR Big Band & WDR Radio Orchestra.

Arranger conductor: Peter Herborn.

Soloist:
Uwe Ochsenknecht: vocals.

These are the pieces Peter recreates for a musical picture that is as groovy as it is orchestral: Bridge over troubled water. Tracks of my tears. Homeward bound. Everlasting love. Stop in the name of love. When the music is over.

Lorca

2005

Based on fictional situations of his life, this opera tells the story of the Spanish writer Federico Garcia Lorca, beginning with his youth in Granada and ending with his early death as one of the first victims of the fascists in the Spanish Civil War.

Lorca’s homosexual disposition, his opposition to the Roman Catholic Church and the all-pervading machismo, his liberal basic attitude, his idea of theater as an education of the people, entirely in the sense of a Berthold Brecht or Erwin Piscator, led to his becoming an enemy image of the first rank for the fascists.

Obsessed since early childhood with the idea of death and the fear of it, he tried to escape the Civil War and its consequences. He went back to Granada, to the place where he was born. But instead of escaping the war, he runs into the arms of his murderers.

Thus, the opera LORCA represents the incarnation of a modern tragic hero who, like Oedipus in ancient mythology, runs all the more to his doom as he is trying to escape it.

The Kold Kage - The music of Gary Thomas

1994

WDR Cologne. Broadcast production. WDR Big Band.

Arranger conductor: Peter Herborn.

The Kold Kage is the title of a 1991 CD by Gary Thomas. Gary was one of the first jazz musicians to integrate rappers and DJs into his funk-influenced pieces, which always contain rhythmic and often harmonic complexity . In this production with the WDR Big Band, that complexity is extended by a jazz-orchestral, sometimes free-tonal component. The pieces Peter has arranged for this program are:

Gate of Faces
The Divide
Beyond the Fall of Night
The Kold Kage
Kulture Bandits

Soloists:
Joe “BMW” Wesson: rap vocals.
Gary Thomas: tenor sax, flute. Tim Murphy: piano. Ed Howard: double bass. Gene Jackson: drums.

These are the pieces Peter recreates for a musical picture that is as groovy as it is orchestral: Bridge over troubled water. Tracks of my tears. Homeward bound. Everlasting love. Stop in the name of love. When the music is over.
